If you have a state society join it! You will find that you can learn so much from your fellow opticians. Take courses, read trade magazines, find your passion within the industry!

 

Why should anyone get certified/licensed?

If you consider this your profession then you should want to be highly educated and credentialed to show your patients that you are knowledgable!

 

In your experience, what is the best way to prepare for an Opticianry test?

Take and ABO or NCLE approved review course!

 

What do you remember as being a prominent part of the test or that you were surprised to see on the test?

I was surprised to see questions about medicine.

 

How do you decide if an additional credential should be earned?

I feel you should always strive to continue learning and growing.

 

What was the point when you decided to attain your license/certification?

I was at a point in my life that I needed a career change, My Dad had just passed away from cancer and I had worked with children since college. I was burnt out and looking for something else differenct. My husband needed a fill in optician at his practice. I had been in the office at times and liked working with patients and buying eyewear. I decided to become an apprenctice and work towards my License!

 

What do you feel is your strongest skill as an Optician?

I think I am fantastic with patients. I find it easy and comfortable to communicate with them. Interpreting their prescriptions and finding eyewear that meets function and fashion.

 

What role have you held that best helped you to be the Optician you are today?

A director to the Optician Association of Massachusetts!

 

What is your advice to someone who lacks sales skills or confidence?

Greet and say hello to everyone! Being comfortable talking to people will make it easier to sell them what they need!

Opticianry can be so rewarding if you get involved and network with others!
